Demystifying Semen Analysis
When couples face roadblocks on their journey to parenthood, one of the first steps is a semen analysis. At Virginia Fertility & IVF, we believe in leaving no stone unturned. That’s why we dive deep into male fertility potential with this diagnostic test, using the results to guide our next steps.
What is Semen Analysis?
Semen analysis, also called the sperm test, is all about checking the quality of your swimmers. We take a sample and put it under the microscope, looking at things like sperm count, movement, shape, and other factors that can affect your fertility.
Preparing For Your Semen Analysis
To ensure we get the most accurate results, you’ll be given specific instructions. Be sure to avoid things like lubricants, alcohol, smoking, and dipping tobacco that can contribute to poor sperm production. You’ll also be told to refrain from ejaculating for two to five days before the test.
Getting Down to Business
When it’s time for the semen analysis, we’ll set you up in a private room and hand you a sterile container. For the most accurate results, we recommend coming to our office for the sample collection. Our lab experts will take over from here. They’ll scrutinize your sample under the microscope, checking out the density (concentration or number), sperm movement (motility), and sperm shape (morphology). They’ll also evaluate other aspects such as semen volume, presence of white blood cells, and a subdivision of sperm movement into rapid versus slow movement.
Ready, Set, Talk!
Once you’ve got the results, it’s time to schedule a follow-up with one of our fertility specialists or your referring doc. They’ll help you make sense of it all, provide expert guidance, and discuss the next steps to take. It’s important to note that when one or more of the semen parameters returns abnormal, a second semen analysis may be recommended. If that one is also abnormal, a consultation with a urologist may be recommended.
